In the opening concert of Arkipelag Chamber Music Festival 2024 we will present music written during four centuries and over two continents. Around the turn of the century and in the early decades of the 20th century, the world was changing rapidly and became increasingly international.

The events of the world were also expressed in the music being written. The composers had greater opportunities to travel and seek inspirations from various sources, which was also the case for the composers you can hear in the first part of the concert.

Nadia Boulanger, Germaine Tailleferre and George Gershwin all travelled between France and the USA, and lived in both Paris and New York during periods of their lives. When Gershwin came to Paris in the 1920s, he did so specifically to study with Boulanger. However, she rejected him with a comment that “she had nothing to teach him”.

Boulanger’s “Three Pieces for Cello and Piano”, written in 1914, will open the concert, followed by Germaine Tailleferre’s energetic piano trio composed only two years later. Thereafter we will present a unique arrangement of Gershwin’s “Walking the Dog”, before travelling a few decades back in time to the 1890s and Brahms’ beloved clarinet quintet.

Folkjazz på svenska

Mälarhöjdens kyrka 9th of august 6pm

Singer Ellen Almgren and pianist Olov Lindroth invite you to a playful and heartfelt concert in the spirit of folk music. The duo is drawing from the Swedish folk tradition, playing both well and lesser known songs, as well as jazz melodies in innovative arrangements.

Ellen and Olov met while studying folk music at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. During their studies the two of them played together a number of constellations and developed a nearly telepathic interaction. The duo I guided by curiosity and presence, when they come together in a summerly concert, seamlessly blending tradition and improvisation.

The concert is free of charge!

Caroline Shaw’s duo “Limestone & Felt” for viola and cello opens the concert in the beautiful “Storängssalen”. With its exploration of contrasts between hard and soft surfaces, between limestone and felt, the piece will set the tone for a concert that takes us on a journey from the landscape of Funen to Italy and Florence.

Contrasts is also central in Nancy Dalberg’s string quartet in d minor. Dalberg grew up on the estate of Mullerup on Funen and later studied composition with Carl Nielsen. It was Nielsen who, in 1915, arranged a concert where Dalberg’s works, including the first string quartet, were first played publicly.

The concert received mixed reviews and “too many contrasts” was among the critics’ remarks about the string quartet. In addition, a “a lack of femininity” in the compositions were remarked upon – a comment that critics would repeat about Dalberg throughout her career as a composer.

Finally, we will travel to Italy and Florence. It was here, in 1890, that Tchaikovsky wrote one of the themes of what would later evolve into his sextet “Souvenir de Florence”. Although he was influenced by the beauty of the Italian landscape and the contrast to the Russian winter, he stayed true to his Russian roots, which can be heard throughout the composition.

Grünewaldvillan 10th of august 4pm

Toner & tavlor

Welcome to an afternoon of art and chamber music! During the final concert we will present the results of a collaboration with the art school “Kajsa och Olle Nymans ateljéer”. Paintings created by the students of the school will be shown in a combined vernissage and concert in the room that was once the artist Isak Grünewald’s studio.

In the concert we will present movements from the works performed earlier during the festival, combined with well-known gems. You will be able to hear everything from Gershwin and Boulanger to Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi, as well as Nordic romanticism and traditional Nordic folk music. Here is something for each taste, whether it’s your first time at a classical concert or you are a seasoned concert goer.

The vernissage will open at 15:30 and the concert starts at 16:00.
